Career roadmap
The SDET Roadmap
An SDET is a software engineer whose product is confidence. The title implies you can build tooling, not just use it — frameworks, harnesses, fixtures, pipelines and now AI-assisted generators.
The roadmap, stage by stage
Engineering fundamentals
Code you would be happy to review: clear structure, dependency management, tests for your test tooling, and comfort with Git and code review.
Own a framework
Move from writing tests to owning the layer everyone writes tests on — page objects, fixtures, data strategy, reporting and flake control.
- Playwright + TypeScript or Python + Pytest
- Fixtures and test data
- Reporting and triage
Full-stack testing
UI alone is not enough. Add API suites, contract checks and a working understanding of performance behaviour.
Pipelines and developer experience
Your suite should be fast, parallel, and pleasant to run locally. Developer experience is part of the SDET job.
AI-assisted tooling
Generators, triage assistants and agents that draft tests — build them, then hold them to the same review bar as human code.
Skills you'll gain
- Framework architecture
- API + UI automation
- CI/CD and parallelism
- Performance awareness
- AI-assisted tooling
- Code review
Why it matters for your career
SDET is the highest-leverage individual-contributor track in QA, and the natural stepping stone to QA architect.

FAQ
What is the difference between QA engineer and SDET?
An SDET builds the tooling and frameworks other testers use, and is expected to write production-quality code.
Do SDETs need to know CI/CD?
Yes — pipeline ownership is usually part of the role.
Is AI part of the SDET job now?
Increasingly, yes: generating test scaffolding, triaging failures, and testing the AI features your product ships.
